Idlicious – Pune January 23, 2010

Ever since I returned from my stint in Chennai, I have come to know that what they serve in the name of ‘sambhar’ here, in most restaurants in Pune, is just a fraud. Like one of those Amitabh Bachhan lookalikes- they have the haristyle, and the adopted manner-rism, but no substance at all.

Vaishali, has ruled the South Indian food scene for ages in Pune. Inspite of the long waiting lines, any time of the day, any day of the week and any week of the year, the food is to die for. Plain and simple.

Today, I finally went to a new South Indian joint in Baner, called Idlicious. Sparsely furnitured, but very clean.

The menu is simple, and to the point, with the prices that are very friendly. On top of the usual South Indian fare, they also serve lunch thali, and daily specials. They, however do not serve parathas, understandably so.

We ordered a plate of Idli – Wada, a plain masala dosa (soft), tomato utthappam, a tumbler of piping hot rasam and buttermilk.

The food was served quickly, was piping hot and very very appetizing at sight! The accompaniments included cocunut chutney, sambhar and is asked for, podi (powder chutney). Frankly speaking i was disappointed with the coconut chutney, and to some extent the sambhar as well. The chutney was not thick, as it is meant to be, but rather a slightly liquidy affair. The sambhar also did not meet the bar, but was more like daal, with stuff bolied and added. I am not saying that the sambhar was totally bad, but it could have been better.

The rasam was simply too good. It was hot, spicy and you could feel it going down your throat and settling in that very special place, where only mother’s food can reach. I’m still relishing the thought of the rasam ‘crusing’ my insides.

Our total bill came to Rs 125, which I must say, is a pleasant surprise in these times.

I would recommend this place to all. It’s ideal for a brunch sort of thing on a lazy Sunday.

Next time, i am going to try the curd rice. Friendly voices have told me, it is out of this world.

Paranormal Activity January 17, 2010

Just the other day, Sonal and I were discussing, how we haven’t been treated to a really scary horror movie like Bhoot or Omen. Most of the so called horror movies coming out of Hollywood (Dawn of the Dead, 28 days/weeks/months/light years later etc) has been pure and unadulterated trash. Even Bollywood, with offerings like Vastu Shashtra, hasdn’t come up with any thing worth remembering.

‘Paranormal Activity’ was what it took to break the monotony of the typical horror movie definition. Devoid of any blood, gore or loud absurd music, the movie targets our primal fear.

At the heart of the movie is a young couple, Katie and Micah, who feel that there is something ‘not human’ in their house. The man of the house decides to take care of ‘things’ on his own, by filming the unexplainable activities in their house. The camera is ‘on’ even while they sleep. What follows is best described as eerie and heart stopping. Moving doors, lights switching on and off by itself, heavy footsteps, sleepwalking Katie, and other stuff which will surely have a chill running up and down your spine.

What made the entire movie so believable was the minimalistic use of technology and the way that it was shot. The entire movie is shot using a hand held camera, which gives it an air of authenticity. There were many scenes in the movie where I gasped in sheer horror, and had to tell myself that this was just a movie. Before, i went in the theater, a lot of folks had told me that the movie was over hyped, and my expectations were set accordingly. The movie is anything but over hyped. The girl sitting in the row in front of us was sobbing the loudest that i have ever seen anyone cry.

Oren Peli, the director, has done a marvelous job with the camera works, and i can safely say that he may have just started a new trend of movie making.

Even the college crowd, who can typically take the fun out of any late night horror flick, were shut up for once.

I guess no one slept with the lights off yesterday. I know, i didn’t.

Paranormal Activity is a must watch for the horror fans out there.

How i think we can sail through this recession- Part 1 February 27, 2009

A lot of times i think that this global recession that is going on, is just a reality check. It has only been catalyzed by the great financial crash in the US of A. The pointers i thought of may not be extraordinarily out of the box, or anything like that, and may be you have heard of them earlier, but still. Just consider it a list of what can be done at the ground level.

  1. Help Others – Help anybody. Lots of people out there are losing jobs. These guys have a lot of responsibilities, loans etc, just like any one of us. What can we do? May be our network can help? Maybe that good friend of yours who just set up a plant is looking for a plant manager? Maybe someone you don’t know, who has lost his job, has relevant experience. Maybe anything! What i am trying to say is, try and help anyone who you think could use a hand. You don’t necessarily have to know them to help them. Open up. Release an email id, where people can reach you. Yes you may be spammed, but hey is this the time when we should really be worried about spam? Be careful about fraudulent emails though.
  2. Power of the Network – The actual power of the network has been severely under-utilized thanks to the plethora of so called business networks that have come up. Your contacts can come in handy for someone. Maybe someone you don’t know could be helped by someone you DO know. 🙂
  3. Do some free service- Do you think you have good writing skills? Help someone out with their resume. For free. And why not? Did no one help you when you started writing your own? I am ready to help anyone who needs help with resume writing. Mail me at ketalystus@yahoo.com. And i’ll see what can be done.

Ok. So this was part I. Watch this space for Part II and beyond.

Pakistan’s only flicker of hope is no more. And fingers have already started pointing. It will be a while, and probably never, before the culprits are taken to task.

It could be one them Talibanis, or Pakistans political bigwig, or for that matter the CIA. Who is responsible is a question of little consequence now. The truth is, Bhutto is out, never to return.

The whole world mourns this dastardly and cowardly act, and is trying to find solace in something. Pakistans has the potential to tipple the world balance for the worse and spark of major unrest globally.

It is not Islam at fault. The holy Koran does not preach violence and certainly not assasinations. It is a bunch of highly frustrated and mentally ill people with no use of their lives.

Long live Bhutto. Long live Democracy.

Pune Wine Tasting Festival December 18, 2007

Posted by Chatore Diaries in Uncategorized.

Its been a long time my friend…and here i am…Back to blogging.

Saturday last, me and some friends had gone Wine Tasting..organized by the Pune Gourmet club, there were some 40 plus Indian wines to be tasted, and bought.

This, I believe, was the first time such an event was organised in Pune, and I am ever grateful to the PGC. Where else could you have so much up-class booze for only 250 bucks!!

Just kidding.

On a much serious note, this was one helluva event. There were wines from the house of Sula, Seagram’s, N.D’s, Vinsura, Voir and Voulois (or something), and others, whose names i cant quite recollect. 🙂

After buying our passes from TiAmo at E-Square the previous evening, off we went off in the search of the right wine for our palettes.

I must say, the event was very well planned by the PGC, and the location was also perfect for such an event. We were handed our Wine Tasting cards, Wine Guides, and effective Wine Tasting glass..which i got to keep..and 5 others as well.

After tasting all sorts of wines from all sorts of makers in 2 hours, it was time for some grub. I must say, the food could have been better, and from the sponsors. But there was this one special item which must be mentioned here, and that was the Cajun Chicken and Fish. I am not much of a fish fan, so i’ll just talk about the chicken. It was a delight!! Cajun, they told me finds its origin in New Orleans. A little spicy, and full of flavors. And just rightly priced. 10 bucks a healthy serving!!

So after about 4 hours of drinking, i mean, tasting, I came to the conclusion, that i like Chenin Blanc, that too from Seagrams- Nine Hills stable. It is a white wine, with just the right mix between a sweet and a dry wine.

And now, i am off to buy a bottle of the same.

Till then…happy tasting.

Indian Cricket Team Raped. Again. October 11, 2007

Posted by Chatore Diaries in Uncategorized.

Same story. Different grounds.
The Indian team has been savagely raped by the Aussies. Once again. And the series is only half way through.
So why does the Indian cricket team not take a sabbatical, do something meaningful. Say like take painting courses or cookery classes. Sometimes these have helped even the un-dead. Why don’t they accept the fact that they just don’t have it in them to play cricket at an international level anymore!! The real champions have retired ages back, and what we see on the field are just remnants of a cigarette enjoyed till the last puff. But its gone now. Over. Fin.

May be, the so called heroes, cricketers, Ad Boys, should rest now. Give the game some recovery time. And maybe never show their ugly faces ever again. This will save a lot of heartbreaks across the country. Save the countless spirits broken nationwide whenever this bunch of Playing Losers come back defeated. The billion plus supporters of these morons of the field should also take a break. And it will also save a lot of corporate monies.

Something like, 10, may be 20 years, should help us all forget the trauma.

But i got a feeling that says, “boss, this ain”t gonna happen. Atleast not in your lifetime.”

The Indian cricket team will play on, and be raped. Time and again.

This brings a famous saying to my mind…which goes something like this ” When rape is inevitable, enjoy it”. Perfect fit foe the Indian Cricket Team Lads.

The not so Distant Past August 22, 2007

Everything seems to be rushing by me.

Time, Money, Age.

It seems the more i have the more i want.

Why cant i stop wanting?

I remember the good ol” days when i was in school, the care free attitude. I had no money, except what my folks gave me , which wasnt much to say. I was more satisfied then, than i am now.

Now, when i earn my own buck, i am less satisfied, more crunched for time. It seems that i can no longer enjoy the simple joys of life, without planning them well in advance.

Overall a poor man, a really poor one.
